As suggested by its common name, the native perennial early goldenrod is the first goldenrod species to flower at Salter Grove.  It is easy to distinguish from the others even when all goldenrods are flowering because it tends to be shorter and characteristically has leaves growing at its base. There is a healthy patch of this species along the Upland Trail near marker U9.

Native Americans used the early goldenrod to treat convulsions, nausea, diarrhea and liver problems.
